Around Podewski's conjecture

A long-standing conjecture of Podewski states that every minimal field is algebraically closed. It was proved by Wagner for fields of positive characteristic, but it remains wide open in the zero-characteristic case. We reduce Podewski's conjecture to the case of fields having a definable (in the pure field structure), well partial order with an infinite chain, and we conjecture that such fields do not exist. Then we support this conjecture by showing that there is no minimal field interpreting a linear order in a specific way; in our terminology, there is no almost linear, minimal field. On the other hand, we give an example of an almost linear, minimal group $(M,<,+,0)$ of exponent 2, and we show that each almost linear, minimal group is elementary abelian of prime exponent. Ethology and Overwintering of \u3ci\u3ePodalonia Luctuosa\u3c/i\u3e (Hymenoptera: Sphecidae)

The nesting and overwintering behavior of Podalonia luctuosa (Smith) was studied in New York and Colorado. Females provisioned shallow (ca. 2 cm deep), unicellular nests with a single cutworm (Noctuidae) during April, May, and July. Paralyzed prey were trans- ported on the ground and were cached on plants just above ground level. Prey weights averaged about 400 mg. The miltogrammine fly Hilarella hilarella Zetterstedt parasitized prey at both localities. From I to IO adult females were found to overwinter in burrows 0.5 m deep, which were dug in late summer and early fall. Collection data and field studies indicated that P. luctuosa is bivoltine in the NE U.S

A Note on the Nesting of \u3ci\u3eMimesa Lutaria\u3c/i\u3e (Hymenoptera: Sphecidae)

Five nests of Mimesa lutaria (Fabricius) were excavated and studied at Cranberry Lake, S1. Lawrence County, NY. The nests were shallower than those of other species previously studied, yet the tumuli were large and conspicuous. An average of about 11 adult and nymphal cicadellids were stored in a cell, except for one cell that held five Delphacodes sp. (Delphacidae)

Memristor-based Random Access Memory: The delayed switching effect could revolutionize memory design

Memristor’s on/off resistance can naturally store binary bits for non-volatile memories. In this work, we found that memristor’s another peculiar feature that the switching takes place with a time delay (we name it “the delayed switching”) can be used to selectively address any desired memory cell in a crossbar array. The analysis shows this is a must-be in a memristor with a piecewise-linear ?-q curve. A “circuit model”-based experiment has verified the delayed switching feature. It is demonstrated that memristors can be packed at least twice as densely as semiconductors, achieving a significant breakthrough in storage density

Retirement/recreation communities (RRCs) have been promoted as a way for some rural regions to develop their economies. RRCs can have substantial economic impacts (changes in employment and income) and fiscal impacts (changes in local government revenues and costs) on rural communities. Because the magnitude and direction of these impacts are site-specific, assessments of RRCs as a rural development strategy should consider both the economic and fiscal impacts for a given region.
